Volleyball for both men and women became an official Olympic sport at the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964. At Tokyo 2020, teams are divided into two pools of six teams with each pool playing a round-robin. The top four teams of each pool advance to the quarterfinals and the final round is played under a knock-out system.

Brazil had won gold in either men’s or women’s indoor volleyball in four straight Olympics, with the men claiming the title in 2004 and 2016 and the women in 2008 and 2012.
Celebrating Our Success. The U.S. Women’s National Team is one of the strongest volleyball squads in the world. In 2014, the U.S. broke through for its first major gold medal, winning the FIVB World Championship, and they’ve medaled in every FIVB World Cup since 2003. The five-time Olympic medalists have been on the podium in each of the last three Olympic Games, and more recently, they’ve won the first two iterations of FIVB’s Volleyball Nations League, which began in 2018.

Volleyball has been part of the Summer Olympics program for both men and women consistently since 1964. Brazil, United States, and the former Soviet Union are the only teams to win multiple gold medals at the men's tournament since its introduction. The remaining six editions of the Men's Olympic Volleyball Tournament were won each by a different country including Japan, Poland, Netherlands, Russia, France, and the defunct Yugoslavia. t. e. The volleyball tournaments at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo were played between 24 July and 8 August 2021. 24 volleyball teams and 48 beach volleyball teams participated in the tournament. The indoor volleyball competition took place at Ariake Arena in Ariake, and the beach volleyball tournament at Shiokaze Park, in the temporary Shiokaze Park Stadium.
